Homophobia

West Yorkshire Police have a well publicised race problem amongst its hierarchy. This manifests itself in a failure to attract – and retain – a representative number of BME officers in its ranks.

Homophobia is another form of intolerance that manifests itself in ‘macho’ institutions such as the police and armed forces. In this section of the uPSD website we highlight two cases where the entire approach to complaints/investigations was discoloured by the sexual orientation of the subject of those enquiries.

One of the cases cocerns a serving officer, PC Mark Carter, whose case received national publicity and a second case concerns a member of the public – whom we will not identify – who was the subject of crass and discriminatory remarks concerning what police officers considered to be a perversion and whose complaints ended, like so many, at Leeds High Court.
